Rotten Sleeper Retaining Wall Replaced with New Brick Wall in Burton-on-Trent
We recently completed the replacement of an old timber sleeper retaining wall in Burton-on-Trent, giving this garden a much cleaner, stronger and more permanent finish.
The existing sleepers had deteriorated badly over time and were beginning to rot, making the area look tired and reducing the overall appearance of the garden.
Rather than replacing the sleepers like-for-like, the customer opted for a new brick-built retaining wall, creating a much more durable feature that completely transformed the patio and garden space.
Removing the Old Rotten Sleepers
The first stage of the project involved removing the existing timber sleepers and clearing the area ready for the new wall.
Once the old retaining structure had been removed, the ground was excavated and prepared before new concrete foundations were installed to provide a solid base for the replacement brickwork.
New Brick Retaining Wall
The new retaining wall was constructed using:
blue engineering bricks at the base
matching red facing brickwork above
solid masonry construction
new stepped sections within the garden
brick-on-edge detailing to finish the top of the wall
The blue engineering brickwork provides a strong and durable base while also giving a nice contrast against the red facing bricks.
Finished with Brick-on-Edge Coping
To complete the wall, the top was finished with blue engineering bricks laid on edge.
This gives the wall a neat, traditional finish while also helping protect the top of the brickwork from weather exposure.
The finished wall ties in nicely with the existing patio and provides a much more substantial feature than the old timber sleepers.
Reviving the Garden Space
Replacing the rotten sleepers has made a huge difference to the overall appearance of the garden.
The new brick wall creates a cleaner boundary between the patio and lawn while helping make the outdoor area feel much more finished and usable.
It also provides a longer-lasting solution that will require significantly less maintenance than timber sleepers over the years.
